Art Therapy for adults in CT

You may be wondering what Art Therapy is and how it works. Art Therapy helps us heal from what’s happened to us. With the guidance of an art therapist, adults and children are able to express and process what’s going on for them and learn new coping skills by using art materials to make art, rather than only talking.

Research tells us that trauma and grief is stored in our body, through our senses, not just thoughts in our mind. Art Therapy is action-oriented and mindful which helps us feel safe, regulate our nervous system (heart rate, breathing), reduce stress, improve our body awareness, and increase self-efficacy (belief in yourself) and resilience. Art Therapy helps us express and manage emotions, connect with our unconscious thoughts and feelings and transform them into art, which safely contains them, and allows us to observe them from a distance.

Art Therapy is a process oriented type of art making, which basically means it’s not about making a beautiful painting, collage, or sculpture, etc, which is great because you don’t have to be an artist or creative to benefit from art therapy. Art Therapy is powerful because it’s witnessed by an art therapist who helps you process your experience.
